So, after a couple of walk off wins, the Sox are at .400.
Time to worry?
No.
The Cameron/Ellesbury injury's are a cause for concern, although the two Darnell McDonald home runs have, at least in the short term, mitigated the potential pain. I am still an Ellesbury fan, so i hope his recovery is swift.
However, there is cause for concern.
Giving up so many runs in the last couple games- I can't think of a witty phrase right now, some poet I am- does give some cause for alarm, since the team had been built around the idea of "Defense". How can you genuinely say you have a defensive mindset, then arbitrarily ignore runners on base? You can't have "some" defense, or "selective" defense.
The conscious choice to value defense over offense has made the concept of run prevention even more central to the Red Sox Philosophy. They are lucky to have some offensive production, or the 36 runs scored by opposing teams over the last 5 games would have us at 0-5 instead of a slightly less measley 2-3.
So, letting a guy get to second base is silly, statistically proven to be unimpactful or not. It's a mindset- it's playing baseball and not Tron at the local arcade.
Time to worry?
Maybe.
